A Glimpse Inside US Championships

Clubmate Livvy Shilling reports that life inside the bubble is terrific and not too different from a typical nationals, except that they’ve had no day excursions, Covid precautions abound, and clever cardboard cutouts line the arena. But, she is pleased to share (maybe brag?) that compared to the typical Michigan winter surrounding her training rink in Novi, Michigan, the 70-degree Las Vegas weather is uplifting.

According to Livvy and her ice dance partner Alexander Petrov, “U.S. Figure Skating rose to the challenge to create a safe, yet fun and exciting competition for the athletes. We have plenty of time to manage our schedule and the in-house living conditions have been wonderfully accommodating.” Yes, all the usual excitement and hype is there, but “we’re just exceptionally Covid-aware.”

One tip Livvy & Alexander offer to USFS: keep the pets in the audience, but next year bring the real ones!

Want In On The Action?
Join Kiss & Cry Live

This year, U.S. Figure Skating is introducing a video wall in the Kiss & Cry. The live component of this wall allows fans, family, and friends to be part of the live in-arena show by watching the performances ‘live’ from the video wall and interacting with the athletes after their performance. The interaction will be video only (no audio).

Here are the direct Family & Friends Zoom links for Livvy & Alexander’s events:
Rhythm Dance (Friday, Jan 15 at 4pm EST on NBCSN): https://usfigureskating-org.zoom.us/j/96544085404?pwd=TWw1UmNtRC9KckhvUk1iSkJ3QW9mQT09

Kiss and Cry Live (New for 2021)
For the upcoming U.S. Championships, USFS will incorporate a video wall into the overall design of the Kiss and Cry (Kiss and Cry Live). The live component of this wall will allow fans, family, and friends to be part of the live in-arena show by watching the performances ‘live’ from the video wall and interacting with the athletes after their performance. The interaction will be solely from a video (not audio) standpoint, but we still feel will have a tremendous impact on the athletes especially with no fans in the stands and more importantly, no family or friends.

The plan is to have friends and family in the middle of the screen with fans surrounding the family/friends during a performance. Here’s what the Live Kiss & Cry background will look like.

A November Thank You!

Columbus FSC hosted a successful and safe test session on Saturday, November 8th in Newark, Ohio.

So many Thank Yous!
First, thank you to the judges, coaches, skaters, and their families who traveled to Newark for the club’s first test session in nine months – and our first test session not held at OSU since ????? (anyone know this trivia?).

Deep gratitude also goes out to our Newark families. Their generous volunteer efforts made the test session smooth and covid-safe for all in attendance. Andy Schall, Dan Housman, and Suki Christy played music. Chrissy Schall, Kim Geiger, and Ailene Nash helped with registration/health screening. Ella Schall, Charlet Geiger, Rosie Christy, Kaitlyn Nash, and Hannah Housman were fantastic runners. Many, many, many thanks to Kristan Hausman for coordinating all the volunteers. And a final thank you goes to Lindsay Kidwell for her creative and wonderful hospitality for the judges.

The club is pleased announce that 46/53 tests were passed at the Newark session and is thrilled to congratulate our two new Gold Medalists.

Nekoe Baumgartner passed her Senior FreeSkate at the Newark Test Session.

Hannah Faulkner passed her Senior Moves In The Field at South Dayton FSC’s test session on November 15th.

Ice-Dance.com Focuses on Solo Dance

On July 15, 2020, Ice-Dance.com (IDC) released the first of five articles in a series highlighting the decade long impact of Solo Dance. Daphne Backman, IDC’s owner and Editor-in-Chief, shared with CFSC’s publicity chair Livvy Shilling:

“While we have been dealing with the pandemic and lack of skating, Anne came up with the idea to showcase solo ice dance at first as one article, but now it’s grown into a series. The next article is on some of the coaches that are involved in the sport. We’ll also have articles that contain quotes from solo dancers who are still active in the sport or now have partners.”

Daphne Backman

Anne Calder, a journalist for IDC, wrote that she “started this project with an interview of a local Arizona dancer whose mom I met when I was volunteering for MLB Spring Training this past March. Crazy!!  Since then it has just grown into a series with possibly five articles.”

Columbus FSC is so proud of our growing Solo Dance program and the accomplishments of past and present CFSC Solo Dancers!

Check out ice-dance.com‘s first two articles and watch their site for the rest of the series.
